Fly little sparrow
Saloni watched her mother pace the length of the room, a bemused smile tilting the corners of her lips. Her twin watched from the boxed confines of the laptop and rolled her eyes at Saloni. They knew the drill. They knew their mother. And they know what to do when she got like this. So they waited it out, not speaking, simply reveling in the secure presence of family and love.
Their mother turned, her hands on her hips, worry in her eyes. "Are you sure?"
Saloni chuckled, her twin throwing her hands in the air. "Yes mom," they said in unison before grinning at each other.
"Listen you two, don't give me that attitude. You are my babies and always will be."
More eye rolling followed. "Madre, we're not girls anymore," Saloni reminded softly.
"Well you are to me," their mother replied, her arms crossed in finality.
"You need to trust her," Suhani said, the slow internet connection freezing the picture, but the sound of her voice rang out loud and clear. Suhani was her sister's biggest advocate. Always had been. It was a life long role that she was content to fill. "You've taught her well. Taught us," she said, the picture unfreezing to show her smiling face, "well."
"What she said," Saloni agreed, her thumb pointed in the direction of her 'skype'ing' sister.
Their mother studied their faces. Two girls, no, women, with their own identities, mindsets and quirks. Her beautiful babies, all grown up. Emotion welled within, swirling, filling her up to the tips of her fingers.
"This will change everything," she whispered, a hint of fear underlining the words.
"Mom," Suhani snapped.
"No, she's right," Saloni stepped in, the voice of reason. "This will change everything. I am aware of the repercussions and changes. Its not a small decision and certainly not a light one." She walked to her mother, throwing an arm around her shoulders, "but I've thought about it and I think its the right move to make."
Her mother lifted a hand, curving it around her cheek. "You're right." A small sigh. "You're totally right. My sparrows are ready to fly."
Saloni grinned. Suhani whooped in joy. And mom smiled indulgently.
"So I'm going to call them and let them know I've accepted their offer?" Saloni asked, reconfirming.
"Yes Advocate Saloni Kapadia. Tell them you're ready to be a partner."
